Those who suffer from asthma experience an inflammation of the airways that results in the narrowing of the air passages, making breathing very difficult. Asthma can be aggravated by cold air, which is usually not a concern for us here in southwest Florida, but other triggers such as air pollutants, perfumes, pollens and smoke can affect your condition.
Asthma Symptoms
During an asthma attack you may experience some or all of the following symptoms:
- Coughing
- Wheezing
- Chest tightness
- Shortness of breath
Types of Asthma
- Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB) – EIB is also known as exercise-induced bronchospasm. People with EIB generally experience asthma symptoms only when exercising.
- Occupational Asthma – Harmful substances inhaled on the job through gases, dust, and fumes can seriously affect your health and cause asthma symptoms.
- Childhood Asthma
- Allergic Asthma – This is most common type of asthma. The allergen that triggers the immune system response during an allergy attack can also cause your airways to become inflamed and swollen.

Other Respiratory & Sinus Conditions
Chronic Cough
If you have a cough that last 8 weeks of longer in adults, or 4 weeks in children, that does not go away then you may have chronic cough. Generally, chronic cough is a symptom of another disorder such as hay fever, asthma, or sinus infections. Other causes of chronic cough include acid reflux, postnasal drip, and tobacco use.
Sinus Disease
Sinus Disease, or sinusitis, is the inflammation of the sinuses. Sinus disease stops the normal flow of mucus from the sinuses to the back of the throat. It is often caused by a bacterial infection. Sinus disease can be caused by viruses and fungi (molds). Symptoms include post-nasal drip, discolored nasal discharge, nasal stuffiness or congestion, tenderness of face, frontal headaches, pain in the teeth, coughing and fever. Acute sinus disease lasts three to eight weeks, while chronic sinus disease can last eight weeks or longer. Asthma has been linked to chronic sinus disease. Chronic nasal inflammation and irritation and/or asthma can develop a type of chronic sinus disease that is not caused by infection.
